Casa Manila: A Glimpse of 19th-Century Filipino Life
Tucked within the heart of Intramuros, Casa Manila serves as a tangible window into 19th-century urban Filipino life. Unlike typical museums, the building was reconstructed to replicate a wealthy residence from the Spanish colonial era, complete with the stone-and-wood craftsmanship of a bahay na bato. Construction began in 1981 and was completed in the early 1980s under the guidance of the Intramuros Administration, as part of a larger effort to revive the city’s historical character following World War II. Its façade mirrors a house formerly located on Jaboneros Street in Binondo, linking the property to Manila’s vibrant trade networks and multicultural influences of the period.
