Standing in Plaza San Lorenzo Ruiz, what strikes me first is its shape. Unlike the usual rectangular plazas scattered across the Philippines, this one curves gently in an elliptical form, softening the geometry of the surrounding streets. Granite tiles meet multicolored interlocking bricks underfoot, giving the ground texture and rhythm. Two historic fountains from the Spanish era sit at opposite ends, framing the space like quiet bookends. Royal palms and narra trees offer pockets of shade, and benches trace the perimeter where conversations rise and fade with the hum of traffic from Quintin Paredes Street and Juan Luna Street.
