Malate Church: Manila’s Bayfront Beacon of Faith and History
The story of Malate Church begins in 1588, when Augustinian friars established a parish in the fishing village of Maalat, named for the salty waters of Manila Bay. Dedicated to Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Our Lady of Remedies), the church quickly became a spiritual home for seafarers, fisherfolk, and settlers. Its foundation not only anchored local religious life but also established Malate as a hub of communal gatherings and devotion.
