Quiapo Church: Heart of Manila’s Faith and Pilgrimage
At the bustling heart of Quiapo, Manila, a modest church arose in 1588, only two years after the district itself was founded. Initially built of bamboo and nipa by missionaries of the Order of Friars Minor, it was dedicated to the Sweetest Name of Jesus and Saint John the Baptist. Through the centuries, the parish endured fires, pirate raids by Limahong, and earthquakes, each time rising anew to serve the growing population of devotees. This early history shaped not only the physical structure but the spiritual significance that would define the church for generations.
