The vibrant and eagerly anticipated Sambuokan Festival takes center stage in the City of Mati, Davao Oriental, celebrated throughout October. This week-long extravaganza brings the people of Mati together to express gratitude for the year’s abundant harvests and commemorate the city’s founding anniversary on the 29th of October. The festival is a kaleidoscope of colors, featuring diverse activities such as street dancing competitions, parades, food festivals, sports competitions, and cultural programs, making it a captivating showcase of the rich culture of Davao Oriental.

“Sambuokan,” derived from the Mandaya word ‘buok,’ signifies the concept of ‘one’ or unity among individuals in a community. Specifically, it highlights the oneness and unity among the people of Mati. The Mandaya tribe predominantly resides in the inland areas of Davao Oriental in Mindanao. This term captures the essence of solidarity and communal harmony within the Mati community.
A major highlight is the “Indak Indak sa Sambuokan,” a spirited street dancing competition. The festivities are a testament to Mati’s strength in diversity, embracing various cultures, ethnicities, denominations, economic statuses, and lifestyles. Lasting an entire week, the festival brings people together to celebrate their shared values and common good.
