Osmeña Peak, situated in Dalaguete, Cebu province, was once known as Tan-awan. This striking summit carries the name of President Sergio Osmeña Sr., born in Cebu City in 1878. The peak became a personal retreat for the president, who often visited the area on horseback with his family and friends. The name Osmeña Peak serves as a tribute to his lasting legacy and his deep affection for this scenic spot.

Weather and Conditions

Osmeña Peak, officially known as Mount Labalasan, is characterized by rapidly changing weather conditions. The area often experiences fog and rain, which can alter the hiking experience and visibility. At the summit, there are no shades or shelters, making the exposed conditions more challenging for visitors. The wind can also be quite strong, adding an extra element of unpredictability to the hike.

For those planning to camp overnight, the base area of Osmeña Peak offers picturesque views but is subject to the same unpredictable weather patterns. Despite these challenges, the area’s beauty and the opportunity to experience nature in its raw form make the trip worthwhile for many.

Access and Trails

Reaching Osmeña Peak is relatively accessible via motorcycle taxis or habal-habal rides from Dalaguete Poblacion to Mantalongon Public Market. For those seeking a more adventurous approach, hiking from Mantalongon provides an engaging experience, allowing hikers to enjoy the journey and interact with fellow adventurers. This route is favored by many for its added sense of accomplishment and enjoyment.

Alternatively, first-time visitors or those preferring a simpler approach can take a habal-habal directly to the base of Osmeña Peak. The trek from Mantalongon typically takes about an hour with minimal stops, making it manageable for most hikers. This option provides a convenient way to experience the peak’s beauty without the added challenge of a longer trek.
