A Festival Born from History

The Cagsawa Festival traces its roots to a moment of tragedy and triumph. It commemorates the devastating 1814 eruption of Mount Mayon, which buried the old town of Cagsawa and left only the church’s belfry standing — a haunting yet beautiful reminder of nature’s power and humanity’s endurance. Instead of letting the memory fade into sorrow, the people of Daraga chose to honor their ancestors’ courage through an annual festival that celebrates life and the indomitable will of the Albayanos.

Cultural Splendor and Community Pride

Throughout February, the Cagsawa Festival showcases the best of Bicolano culture and creativity. Streets fill with vibrant costumes and rhythmic music as dance troupes perform during the street dancing competition, depicting stories of the eruption and the community’s rebirth. Cultural shows, art exhibits, and pageants highlight local talents and traditions, while school groups and community organizations take part in parades that echo the joyful resilience of Albay’s people.

The festival’s food fairs are another crowd favorite, offering a taste of authentic Bicolano cuisine — from the spicy heat of Bicol Express to the creamy Laing and sweet pili nut delicacies. Each bite reflects the region’s culinary artistry and the locals’ warm hospitality. Visitors can also explore trade fairs and craft markets where artisans sell handmade products, woven goods, and souvenirs that carry the essence of Albay.

Adventure and Tourism at the Foot of Mayon

Beyond cultural activities, the Cagsawa Festival invites visitors to explore the natural beauty surrounding the ruins. The iconic Cagsawa Ruins Park serves as the festival’s focal point, with breathtaking views of Mayon’s perfect cone. For adventure seekers, local operators offer ATV rides, hiking tours, and photography trails around the volcano, turning every visit into a thrilling journey through Albay’s scenic landscapes.

The festival also provides guided heritage tours that retell the story of the 1814 eruption and the community’s rebirth, reminding everyone that Cagsawa is not merely a ruin — it is a living testament to faith and survival.
