Every February, Candelaria, Quezon lights up in celebration for the Candle Festival, a vivid display of devotion and community pride. The festival centers on the Feast of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, commemorating the purification of the Virgin Mary and presentation of Jesus at the Temple. While it is steeped in Catholic liturgy, the celebration has grown to include street dances, float parades, and communal competitions, making the town a must-visit destination for culture-focused travelers and photographers alike.
The Candle Festival began in 2005, though the blessing of candles has been an important tradition in Candelaria since its centennial observance in 2004. It reflects both the town’s faith and its desire to promote cultural identity, tying centuries-old Catholic rituals to contemporary public celebrations. The blending of ritual and festivity reinforces the community’s sense of shared heritage, giving visitors a chance to witness a living tradition that has become emblematic of Candelaria’s identity.
Over three days, the town center comes alive with the ceremonial blessing of candles, a practice symbolizing light, hope, and devotion. Dancers in ornate costumes perform choreographed routines that pay tribute to the Blessed Virgin, while colorful floats crafted by the 25 barangays of Candelaria glide along the streets, each reflecting local artistry and pride. Complementing these displays, the Glow Awards recognize citizens who have made notable contributions to the community, and night markets feature local delicacies, combining religious observance with an immersive gastronomic experience. Visitors can expect a festival that is as much about participation and observation as it is about photography and capturing the town’s cultural heartbeat.
In April, the festival’s reach extends beyond the municipality when the Candelaria contingent participates in Aliwan Fiesta, the “Festival of Festivals” held in Manila. In 2015, the Candle Festival’s street dance troupe competed alongside Sinulog, Panagbenga, and other regional favorites, achieving recognition as runners-up. Their performance not only showcased Quezon’s cultural richness but also highlighted the festival’s growth from a local observance to a celebrated national event. This exposure underscores the potential of smaller town festivals to contribute to the broader Filipino festival landscape, drawing tourists and cultural enthusiasts from across the country.
Beyond visual spectacle and performance, the Candle Festival is an engine for tourism and local economic growth. By attracting visitors, it supports local vendors, food stalls, and accommodations while promoting heritage awareness. Travelers gain a dual experience: observing a deeply rooted religious ritual and participating in a lively, colorful cultural celebration. The festival’s combination of faith, artistry, and community engagement makes it a standout event in Quezon Province, offering photographers and culture-focused travelers unique opportunities to capture the fusion of tradition and creativity.
