PHOTOGRAPHY and WORDS BY MARIANO SAYNO

Have you ever been to Quezon Province? Driving along the Maharlika highway between Plaridel and Gumaca, you can’t miss the sight of the old Siain Port. This magnificent structure stands grandly against the blue ocean and bright sun, beckoning offers of awe and wonder.

Once a large international port, Siain Port now serves a more humble purpose. During the 1970s and ’80s, locals shipped off copra to western countries – but now the port mainly serves as a fishing spot and hang-out for those in the town.

This old port on the seawall is a favorite road-side stop for many travellers, who come here just to soak in all its glory. You can best take in the awesome beauty of the Sian Port when you’re on the highway. As you drive past, you can view the expanse of the place and admire its picturesque landscape. From here, many have been captivated and just had to take a selfie to capture the moment. Others simply chose to take a break and spend some time relaxing by the ocean – breathing in the refreshing sea breeze as they unwind from their long drive.

But Sian Port is more than just a great vista for tourists and travellers. Local fishermen frequent this area, taking advantage of the sun-drenched waters to dry and prepare the fish called “tuyo” and “bislad”. These items are a popular market item and the fishermen can often be seen selling them near the road or in the town public market.

In the afternoons, the younger folk come to appreciate and experience the port in their own way – swimming, playing and taking in the breathtaking views as they laugh and make memories.

Not to be missed is the lighthouse that stands near the port entrance. This was built to guide the ships and boats that sail into the port. And at night, you can find people sitting around the lighthouse, enjoying calm conversations with the cool sea breeze blowing beside them. Lucky ones might even be able to witness a beautiful sunset from the area. Watching the sky bloom into shades of red and gold is truly a sight to behold.

Siain Port surely has held so many memories for those living in Plaridel, but the old structure will always remain a romantic reminder of years past. If you’re ever in the area, take a stroll by the port and experience its captivating view for yourself.
