When exploring heritage towns in the Philippines, Taal in Batangas always stands out. Often overshadowed by Taal Lake and Taal Volcano, the town itself is a cultural treasure chest. Founded by Augustinian friars in 1572, Taal became one of the earliest Spanish settlements in Luzon. Its strategic position near waterways connecting to Balayan Bay made it a bustling center of trade, agriculture, and cultural exchange in the 16th and 17th centuries. Through centuries, the town survived volcanic eruptions, colonial power shifts, and economic transformations, yet retained its historic core remarkably intact.

Check out the video for more highlights. See what I’ve captured through my lens with Point of View (POV) photography. Using a body cam, I’ll take you on an interactive tour, showing you behind-the-scenes moments of capturing the shots shared here.
Check out the video below for additional features. Explore what I’ve captured through my lens in this cinematic slideshow.
Designated Heritage Town and National Historical Landmark

The town center, or poblacion, is officially recognized as a National Historical Landmark, reflecting its wealth of colonial architecture and culturally significant sites. Walking the narrow streets feels like stepping back in time, with continuous blocks of ancestral houses (bahay na bato), stone churches, civic buildings, and museums each telling their own story.

The Crown Jewel: Taal Basilica

Dominating the skyline is Taal Basilica, the Minor Basilica and Parish of Saint Martin of Tours. Construction began in 1856 under architect Luciano Oliver and was completed in 1878. Measuring nearly 89 meters long and 48 meters wide, it was the largest Catholic church in the Philippines and Asia at the time. Its cruciform layout, towering columns, and elegant symmetry reflect both Filipino craftsmanship and European Baroque influence. The basilica stands not just as a place of worship but as a symbol of resilience, rebuilt after volcanic destruction to overlook Balayan Bay.

Ancestral Houses and Colonial Architecture

Taal’s heritage is embodied in its ancestral homes such as the Doña Marcela Agoncillo Museum, the childhood home of the flagmaker of the first Philippine flag, Casa Gahol and Villa Tortuga, elegant residences showcasing elite Spanish-era Filipino design, and the Don Leon Apacible House, honoring the revolutionary hero’s family. These houses, with capiz windows, carved wooden doors, and stone foundations, are either preserved as museums or inhabited by descendants. The layout of streets and residences gives the town a distinct coastal Tagalog charm, comparable yet unique to places like Vigan.

ABOVE: The Taal Municipal Hall in Batangas, also called Casa Real, is a Spanish colonial building built in 1845, featuring a tile roof, the town’s founding year “1572,” and a decorative “Casa Real” inscription—located in the Taal Poblacion, a National Historical Landmark.

Historic Civic Structures

The Taal Municipal Hall, formerly Casa Real, erected in 1845, served as the colonial government hub. Its neoclassical design, with balcony-lined upper floors and portico, complements the town plaza and basilica, defining Taal’s civic and social landscape.
