Island Dreamer Resort: A Quiet Escape in Talisay, Batangas That Feels Like Home
Located in Barangay Caloocan, Talisay, Batangas—just a couple of hours’ drive from Metro Manila—is a quiet little spot that’s as unbothered as it is underrated:
Calaca Church, formally the Saint Raphael the Archangel Parish Church, was established shortly after the founding of Calaca on May 10, 1835. By 1836, local leaders and parishioners had begun planning a permanent parish dedicated to Saint Raphael the Archangel, the town’s patron saint. Worship initially occurred in a simple chapel made from bamboo and nipa, reflecting the humble beginnings of this spiritual community. The initiative for a stone structure was led by Fr. Basilio Vizconde, the first parish priest appointed by the Archbishop of Manila in 1837.
Construction was a deeply communal effort. Men, women, and children carried sand, stone, wood, and adobe from nearby Balayan via the Pansipit River, using small boats or bancas. After over two decades of collaborative labor, the stone church was completed in 1861, officially dedicated to Saint Raphael the Archangel, revered as the patron of healing, travelers, the sick, doctors, and lovers.
The church is steeped in local legend. One story tells of Saint Raphael appearing as a young boy during a violent storm, calming the surging waters with a simple gesture. The Black San Rafael, a dark-skinned representation of the archangel, continues to draw pilgrims, especially on Wednesdays, a special devotional day. Devotees come to offer prayers, seek healing, or simply honor centuries of tradition.
Calaca Church showcases Spanish colonial design with Romanesque touches on its facade and ornate frontage. Buttresses reinforce the building against seismic activity, while inside, the painted ceilings and dome over the central altar stand out as visual focal points. The church maintains a cruciform layout, typical of period Catholic architecture, inviting visitors to explore both its spiritual and aesthetic dimensions.
Over time, the church has been carefully preserved. In 1972, the roof was replaced, sponsored by film producer Augusto Bernarte. A major façade restoration took place in 2010, supervised architecturally to respect its historical character, funded by local corporations such as Sem-Calaca Power Corp and DMCI Inc. Today, the church compound also houses a parish office and a museum displaying historical artifacts that tell the story of the parish and its devotional life.
Beyond Mass, Calaca Church serves as the spiritual heartbeat of the town. Its feast day on October 24, honoring Saint Raphael, is a highlight of the year. Religious liturgies, fluvial processions, street celebrations, and dalits of intercession mark the day. The feast blends seamlessly with the CalacAtchara Festival, a local cultural celebration that fosters community pride and draws visitors from surrounding areas.
