A Journey Through Time

Majayjay Church traces its roots back to the late 16th century, when Spanish missionaries built the first structure using bamboo and nipa. Over the years, it endured multiple reconstructions due to fires and natural calamities. By the early 18th century, the present stone church was completed, featuring remarkable brickwork, thick walls, and a distinctively towering belfry. In January 2025, Pope Francis elevated its status to a Minor Basilica, a prestigious recognition that further cemented its significance in Philippine religious history.

Architectural Marvel

One of the most striking features of Majayjay Church is its Romanesque-style façade, complemented by an impressive five-story bell tower. The walls, measuring nearly three meters thick, were constructed to withstand time and natural disasters. Inside, the high ceilings, intricately designed altars, and antique retablos transport visitors to the Spanish colonial era. The azulejo-tiled floors and centuries-old religious relics add to the church’s charm, making it a perfect destination for heritage enthusiasts.

A Pilgrim’s Haven

Majayjay Church is more than just an architectural masterpiece; it is a spiritual sanctuary. Devotees flock to the church to seek blessings from its patron, Saint Gregory the Great. The nearby Chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Porteria, which enshrines a revered Marian image brought by Spanish missionaries in the 18th century, further enriches the religious experience of visitors.

Exploring Beyond the Church

A visit to Majayjay Church is best complemented with an exploration of the town’s natural wonders. Just a short drive away lies the enchanting Taytay Falls, a pristine waterfall perfect for a refreshing dip. Travelers can also take a scenic journey through the verdant landscapes of Majayjay, dotted with ancestral homes and lush farmlands, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city life.
