Volcanic Origins and Geological Significance

The lake’s almost perfectly round formation is a striking reminder of its volcanic origins, akin to the nearby Lake Tikub in Tiaong. Both lakes were shaped by ancient volcanic activity, and their symmetrical forms highlight the powerful geological forces that once shaped this region. Situated close to the prominent San Cristobal and the majestic Mount Banahaw, Gunao Lake’s geological significance is further emphasized by its connection to these notable volcanic landmarks.

Economic Importance and Aquatic Life

In addition to its natural and historical significance, Gunao Lake plays a crucial role in the local economy. The lake’s shores are dotted with several fishponds, which are vital sources of income for the community. These ponds, along with the lake’s rich aquatic life, support the cultivation of various freshwater fish, including tilapia, hito, and dalag. Traditional fishing practices are prevalent in the area, with residents using fishing rods to catch tilapia, a species well-suited to the lake’s nutrient-rich waters.

Conservation and Rehabilitation Efforts

Acknowledging the importance of preserving Gunao Lake’s natural beauty and supporting the livelihoods of its residents, the local government of Dolores, Quezon, is dedicated to an ambitious program of rehabilitation and conservation. Recognizing the challenges posed by algae growth and other ecological issues, authorities are implementing targeted strategies to restore and maintain the lake’s ecological balance. These efforts include initiatives to improve water quality, manage aquatic vegetation, and promote sustainable practices among local fishpond operators.
