It is a testament to devotion woven into the urban fabric, reflecting both resilience and community spirit. From Humble Beginnings to a Parish of Identity
The parish’s story begins in the mid‑1970s, when families moving from Tondo to the Dagat‑dagatan Housing Project brought with them deep faith and a sense of communal purpose. By June 21, 1982, the simple wooden chapel under Rev. Fr. Edgardo Merin became a gathering place for prayer, fellowship, and solace. The Dominican Order (O.P.) took stewardship in 1985, invigorating parish life and nurturing both devotion and community growth. The canonization of San Lorenzo Ruiz and his companions in 1987 linked the parish to the first Filipino saint, giving it a name that continues to inspire courage and conviction.
Architectural Symbolism and Modern Growth
Visitors today encounter a cruciform church elevated above potential floodwaters, consecrated on September 24, 2011, designed by Professor Mary Ann Venturina Bulanadi of UST College of Architecture. Its layout is functional yet deeply symbolic, echoing Christ’s sacrifice and the martyrdom commemorated within. The 2015 completion of the Bahay Pari further strengthened the parish’s infrastructure, demonstrating growth from a modest chapel to a vibrant spiritual hub that supports pastoral care, outreach, and community programs.
Devotion in Daily Life
San Lorenzo Ruiz and Companion Martyrs Parish is animated not only by structure but by the rhythm of parish life. Daily Masses, Sunday celebrations, and seasonal novenas create a continuous cadence of worship. Sacraments like baptisms, weddings, and confessions, along with street liturgies and community prayers, reveal a parish fully engaged in both spiritual and social dimensions of its congregation’s life. The vibrancy of these rituals underscores the parish as a living, breathing center of faith.
The Story of San Lorenzo Ruiz
Central to the parish’s spirit is San Lorenzo Ruiz himself. Born in Binondo, Manila around 1594 to a Chinese father and Filipino mother, his life combined devotion, family responsibility, and church service. Falsely accused in 1636, he fled with Dominican missionaries to Japan, where he faced intense persecution. His unwavering declaration of faith — “I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for God; had I a thousand lives, all these to Him I shall offer” — became legendary. Martyrdom came on September 27, 1637, in Nagasaki, and his canonization on October 18, 1987, cemented his role as the first Filipino saint, symbolizing courage, conviction, and fidelity that echo in the parish bearing his name.
