The Manila Zoo, officially known as the Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden, is a 5.5-hectare (14-acre) expanse located in Malate, Manila. Established on July 25, 1959, during the tenure of Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson, the zoo recently underwent major renovations and reopened to the public on November 21, 2022. Constructed at a cost exceeding ₱1 million, the zoo’s inauguration was marked by an event attended by First Lady Leonila Garcia.

The Manila Zoo has evolved into a vibrant sanctuary for wildlife, providing a permanent home to more than 550 exotic animals. The zoo houses 13 species of mammals, 38 species of birds, and 21 species of reptiles. Notable mammals include the African Lion, Bengal Tiger, Celebes Black Ape, Hebra, Philippine Deer, Siberian Tiger, Philippine Monkey, and Philippine Palm Civet.

Exhibits and Features

The avian collection features the Blue Peafowl, Brahminy Kite, Doubled-Wattled Cassowary, Philippine Serpent Eagle, and Ostrich. Reptile enthusiasts can explore exhibits with Pythons, Tortoises, Lizards, Crocodiles, Cobras, Snakes, Turtles, and Iguanas. The aquatic section includes Gars, Carps, and Giant Catfish. Each animal is meticulously monitored and cared for within their habitats by a dedicated team of professional veterinarians.

The zoo also previously housed Queen Bertha, a hippopotamus, as well as Ma’ali (Vishwama’ali), an Asian female elephant who passed away in November 2023. Despite advocacy campaigns for her relocation, Ma’ali remained a prominent attraction until her death. The zoo’s diverse animal collection is organized into four main categories: mammals, birds, reptiles, and aquatic life.

Attractions

In addition to its diverse animal exhibits, the Manila Zoo offers several engaging features for visitors. The Botanical Garden is a significant highlight, nurturing over 10,000 plants from various species. This lush garden provides a tranquil setting and educational opportunities about plant diversity and conservation.

ABOVE: One of the attractions in Manila Zoo is the owl exhibit, where visitors can observe these fascinating nocturnal creatures up close, showcasing their unique features like large, round eyes and their ability to rotate their heads up to 270 degrees.

The Animal Museum showcases an array of preserved specimens and educational displays, offering insights into animal anatomy, behavior, and conservation efforts. Nearby, the Zoo Lagoon serves as a scenic area where visitors can enjoy the calming presence of water features and watch aquatic life in a serene environment.

ABOVE: Ma’ali, an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), has been the main attraction at the Manila Zoo for years, gaining attention as a long-time resident and symbol of the zoo’s wildlife conservation efforts.

The Sewage Treatment Plant is an important infrastructure element, ensuring the zoo’s operations are environmentally sustainable by processing waste and maintaining clean habitats for the animals. The Butterfly Garden adds a splash of color and beauty, featuring a variety of butterfly species in a dedicated space designed to mimic their natural habitats.

For families and children, the Children’s Park provides a playful and educational space with interactive exhibits and activities designed to engage young minds. The Reptile House is a must-see for those interested in reptiles, showcasing a variety of species in carefully designed enclosures that replicate their natural environments. Additionally, areas dedicated to outdoor reptiles allow visitors to observe these fascinating creatures in open-air settings.
